International student/postdoc opportunities

The following information is for international students interested in joining the lab as a student or postdoc.
Note that all of the information below is unofficial -- please refer to the official web pages for the most up-to-date, accurate information.
- Postdocs
There are two postdoc programs administered by the JSPS. Both are described here.
- JSPS Summer Program
This is a short-term (2-month) visiting program (from June-August) for postdocs or graduate students.
Eligibility (from the JSPS website)
- Citizen or permanent resident of the US, UK, France, Germany or Canada (Others with equivalent status may apply if approved by the nominating authority in one of the above countries.)
- Must fulfill one of the following conditions:
- Hold a doctorate degree when the program goes into effect, which must have been received within 6 years prior to April 1 of the said year.
- Be enrolled in a university graduate program.
- Not required to hold full-time position.

Graduate studies:
It is possible to join the lab through one of the following two departments:
- The Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences (GPES) is a new program at the U. of Tokyo conducted entirely in English. All classes will be taught in English, and
Japanese language skills are not required.
Both a Masters and Doctoral studies are offered.
This is the best option for Masters students who do not speak Japanese

The Department of General Systems Studies has Masters and Doctoral programs.

Dept of GSS Masters program:
Currently, Japanese language skills are necessary for the Dept. of GSS Masters program.

Dept of GSS Doctoral program:
Japanese language skills are not a prerequisite for application to the Dept of GSS Doctoral program. Please contact me directly regarding the doctoral program.
International students interested in applying directly to the doctoral program at the Dept. of General Systems Studies are strongly recommended to first apply for a
MEXT postgraduate research scholarship (application for these scholarships is administered by the Japanese Embassy/Consulate General in the applicant's country -- please contact your local Japanese embassy/consulate for information) .
